It is the most basic way we produce food for the world. A farm includes the land and the buildings on it, which are called a farmstead. There are many different types of farms for different needs. You might find a dairy farm for milk or a poultry farm for eggs. Some people have orchards for fruit or vineyards for grapes. Even wind farms or fish farms use this name today.

Barns are common buildings used to hold animals like chickens or pigs. On a dairy farm, cows might go into a milking parlor. This is a special room where they are milked. The milk is kept there until a large tanker comes to collect it. Farmers also need places to store their crops. They use tall buildings called silos or small metal grain bins. These keep grains like wheat and oats safe and dry.

Farming has a very long and interesting history.

About 12,000 years ago, humans began to settle in one place to grow food. This big change is called the Neolithic Revolution. It likely started in the Fertile Crescent in western Asia. People began to tame animals and grow crops there. Later, farming spread to other places like Europe. By 4,000 BC, people in central Europe used oxen to pull plows. There were also big changes during the British Agricultural Revolution and the Green Revolution.

Today, there are about 570 million farms across the whole world.

Most of these are small farms run by families. In fact, family farms make up about 75% of the world's agricultural land. Small farms are very common in less developed countries. Many people there are subsistence farmers who grow food to feed their own families. In places like the United States, farms use many large machines. This helps them do a lot of work with fewer people. In Australia, some farms are huge because the weather makes it hard to keep many animals close together.

Farming is connected to almost everything we eat and use.

When you drink milk or eat cheese, you are enjoying products from a dairy farm. When you eat chicken or eggs, you are eating what a poultry farm produces. Even the clothes you wear might come from a farm that grows natural fibers. Farms can be tiny, like a small hobby farm for fun. They can also be very large, like a plantation for coffee. No matter the size, farms are a key part of how people live.
