A farm, also known as an agricultural holding, is a dedicated area of land used for agricultural processes.

Its primary objective is the production of food and other essential crops. Farms serve as the basic facility for global food production. This includes specialized units like arable farms, vegetable farms, and fruit farms. It also encompasses dairy, pig, and poultry farms. Some land is used to produce natural fiber, biofuel, and other biobased products. The term even covers ranches, orchards, plantations, and estates. Modern definitions have extended to include industrial operations like wind farms and fish farms.

These can operate on land or even at sea.

Farms rely on specific structures to function effectively. The land and buildings together are called a farmstead. Barns are common buildings used to house various animals. On a dairy farm, a milking parlor is a vital facility. This is a dedicated building where dairy cows are milked. The milk is stored there until a milk tanker arrives for collection.

Farmers also require specialized storage for their harvests. Silos are tall buildings used to store grains like wheat or oats. Farmers may also use small, round metal buildings called grain bins. These structures ensure that crops remain protected and ready for use.

There are many distinct types of farms based on what they produce. A dairy farm raises female cattle, goats, or other mammals for milk.

Common breeds used for milk include Holstein and Brown Swiss. Poultry farms focus on raising fowl like chickens, turkeys, or ducks for meat and eggs.

Pig farms specialize in raising pigs for products like bacon and ham. Some farms are named for their specific products, such as vineyards for grapes or orchards for nuts. Other terms describe the farm's scale or method, such as collective, organic, or vertical farms. Even hobby farms exist, which are often used for recreation rather than making a living.

Farming has undergone massive transformations throughout human history. The transition from hunting and gathering to settled agriculture is called the Neolithic Revolution.

This began approximately 12,000 years ago during the Holocene epoch. It likely started with the domestication of livestock in the Fertile Crescent of western Asia. As farming spread, new technologies emerged to increase efficiency. By 4,000 BC, people in central Europe were using oxen to pull plows and wagons.

Later, the British Agricultural Revolution in the 18th century and the Green Revolution in the 20th century created further step-changes in how we produce food.

Global farm statistics reveal a world of diverse scales and ownership. There are approximately 570 million farms in the world today. Most of these are small and operated by families. Small farms under 2 hectares occupy about 12% of the world's agricultural land. Family farms comprise about 75% of the world's agricultural land. In contrast, very large farms have a massive impact on land use. Farms larger than 1,000 hectares make up only 0.1% of all farms. However, these massive holdings manage half of the entire world's farmland.

This shows how much influence large-scale agriculture holds.

Ownership and control of farmland have historically dictated social power. In medieval European societies, feudalism centralized control of land and labor. This was a system of political power tied directly to the soil. In early American democracy, owning land was actually a requirement for voting. Modern farming has changed this relationship through mechanization. As machines make farming more efficient, the need for human labor decreases. In the United States, for example, the number of farms and family workers dropped significantly between 1910 and 2000. This shift has largely decoupled political power from the actual ownership of farms.

Farming connects to many different economic and environmental systems. In less developed countries, many people are subsistence farmers. They grow food primarily to feed their families and sell any extra in local markets. In developed nations, farms are often highly mechanized and part of large agribusinesses. For example, in the United States, corn production is heavily influenced by the demand for ethanol. This can lead to massive planting seasons, such as the 90.5 million acres expected in 2007. Whether through large-scale industrial operations or small community holdings, farms remain the foundation of human survival and global trade.
