A family farm is a place where a family owns or runs the business.

These farms are a huge part of how the world eats. In fact, families manage about 500 million out of the 570 million farms on Earth. In the United States, family farms are very important to the economy. They operate 90 percent of the nation's farmland. They also account for 85 percent of the value of the country's agricultural production.

Even though they are called "family" farms, they can be many different sizes.

How people define a family farm depends on where they live. In Brazil, the law is very specific about what counts. A farm there is only a family farm if it is small. It must be worked mostly by family members and can have at most five extra workers. In the United States, the rules are a bit different. The 2012 Census of Agriculture says a family farm is any place that sells $1,000 or more of products each year. It also says most of the business must be owned by the operator and their relatives.

These rules help governments understand how land is used.

History shows that farming has changed many times over the centuries. In the Roman Republic, there were huge estates called latifundia. These large lands focused on exporting things like grain, olive oil, or wine. Instead of using machines, they relied on slave labor. Later, in medieval Europe, a system called manorialism became common. In this system, a Lord of the Manor held the power. He owned the land and the people worked on it.

This was very different from the way many families farm today.

Other cultures had different ways of managing their land and homes. The Germanic peoples used a system of heritable estates. They called these family estates *ōþalan. This meant the land belonged to a specific family or clan. Because of this, they often lived in spread-out homes instead of big villages. This is called a dispersed settlement structure.

In Germany, the word Bauernhof is used today to mean a family farming estate. This shows how long these traditions have lasted in different parts of the world.

Modern changes like the Industrial Revolution changed farming once again. New machines allowed people to farm much larger areas of land. This led to fewer but much bigger farms. Many people left small farms to work in new jobs. Some even moved to the New World or the Russian Empire. In the United States, the Homestead Act of 1862 helped people start new family estates.
