These large structures serve many different jobs for farmers. In North America, barns often house livestock like cattle and horses. They also provide a dry place to store equipment and fodder. Fodder is the food that animals eat to stay healthy. Many barns also hold large amounts of grain like corn or soy.

Because they do so much, people often give them special names. You might hear about a dairy barn or a tobacco barn.

Inside a barn, there are many clever ways to manage work. One important area is the hayloft, also called a mow. This is a high floor used to store dried grass.

To get hay up there, farmers use a hay track. This is a rail with a pulley and a trolley. It helps lift heavy loads to the top. Some barns even have a silo for storing fermented grain. In the past, people used trap doors to drop feed down to animals.

The history of the barn goes back a long time. The word comes from Old English words for barley and storage.

This means a barn was originally a storehouse for grain. Many modern barns grew from medieval buildings called tithe barns. These huge buildings were used by monasteries in the 12th century. By the 15th century, thousands of these large barns existed in Western Europe. Some barns even came from very old prehistoric longhouses.

Farmers would cut trees on their own land to build them. Later, people started using smaller pieces of lumber and metal nails. In the mid-19th century, new ways like truss framing became popular. This used less wood and saved time and money. Today, many modern barns are built using strong steel.

Some farmers even use Quonset huts made of plywood or steel.

Barns are also part of our colorful culture. In New England, many barns are painted bright red with white trim.

This happened because red iron oxide was a cheap way to protect the wood. This same red color is traditional in Sweden, too. In the past, barns were more than just workspaces. They were places for the whole community to gather. People would hold big barn dances inside these wide spaces.
