These structures are very important after a harvest is finished. They protect the food from pests like rodents and insects. Being built above the ground helps prevent floods and bad weather. They also help keep the grain dry to stop mold.

Without these buildings, the food might spoil or become unsafe. People rely on them to keep their food supplies healthy.

Keeping grain dry is a very important job.

New grain often has too much moisture inside it. This moisture can cause the grain to heat up or ferment. Fermentation is bad because it can create poisonous mycotoxins. One old way to fix this is to spread grain in thin layers. People turn the grain to let air reach it all. Once the grain is dry, it goes into the granary. Today, machines like a grain auger help move the grain.

Humans have been storing grain for thousands of years.

The oldest granaries were found in the Jordan Valley. These date back to 9500 BC. At first, they were placed between other buildings. By 8500 BC, people moved them inside their houses. By 7500 BC, they even made special rooms for storage. These early rooms were about 3 by 3 meters. They had floors that hung in the air to help air flow.

Different cultures built granaries in many unique ways. In Indonesia, people use wood and bamboo for their buildings. They have styles called the Sundanese leuit and Minang rangkiang. In Great Britain, some granaries sat on mushroom-shaped stumps. These stumps are called staddle stones. In ancient Egypt, the dry climate allowed people to use pits. These pits were called silos to store grain for many years. In China, an elaborate system helped prevent deaths from famine.

Today, grain storage looks very different than it did long ago.

Modern farms often use buildings made of manufactured steel. These are built right on the farm to hold grain. In places like Russia and North America, these are huge. People call these large mechanized facilities grain elevators. They use advanced systems to control the air and temperature. These tools make sure the grain stays in good condition. This helps get the food ready for shipping around the world.
