Harvester ants are very busy insects. They are often called agricultural ants. This is because they collect seeds to eat. Some types even collect mushrooms. They store this food in special rooms called granaries.

These ants are important for the land. They help seeds spread to new places. This helps more plants grow in the desert. They also dig tunnels and rooms in the soil. This process helps the soil breathe better.

There are two main ways these ants move seeds. One way is called myrmecochory. This happens when a seed has a special part called an elaiosome. This part is full of fats. It attracts ants that want to eat it. The ants carry the seed away. The second way is called diszoochory. This is when harvester ants move seeds without a special part. They just find the seeds and carry them home.

Working in the hot desert is a hard job. Ants can lose water when it is dry. They get water by eating the fats in seeds. This helps them stay hydrated. The weather also tells them when to work. For example, the ant Veromessor andrei works more when it is humid.

Many colonies like to forage after it rains. Rain and wind can uncover seeds in the dirt. This makes it easier for the ants to find food.

Many different groups of ants are harvester ants. The group Aphaenogaster has about 200 species. The group Messor is also known for harvesting seeds. There are many others like Novomessor and Pheidole. One special ant is Euprenolepis procera. These ants are nomadic mushroom-harvesters.

In the USA, you can find Pogonomyrmex maricopa in Arizona. This species is known for being venomous. Other species include Pogonomyrmex occidentalis and Carebara diversa.

Be careful if you see one of these ants. They have a potent venom for their size. They use a two-step way to sting. First, they bite down on a victim. Then, they follow up with a rapid sting from their abdomen.

This can cause sharp pain for 4 to 8 hours. It can also cause swelling or make hair stand up. This is a very strong reaction for such a small insect.
