Weaver ants are amazing insects that live in trees.

They belong to a group called the tribe Oecophyllini. These ants are famous for their unique way of building nests. They do not just live in holes in the ground. Instead, they weave leaves together to make homes high in the branches.

Some colonies are huge and very busy. A single colony might have more than half a million workers. These workers live in many different nests that spread across many trees. This teamwork helps the whole group survive and grow strong.

Building these nests is a very clever thing that happens.

First, workers find leaves that are close together. They pull on the edges of the leaves with their jaws. If the leaves are too far apart, the ants form long chains using their bodies. They grab each other's waists to reach across the gap. Once the leaves touch, they need something to hold them. Workers find tiny larvae from the nest and carry them to the seam. They tap the larvae on the head so silk comes out. This silk acts like glue to stitch the leaves together.

People have been studying these ants for a long time.

An English naturalist named Joseph Banks first described their nest building. He was part of Captain James Cook's voyage to Australia in 1768. Banks thought their way of managing leaves was very curious. He saw how many ants it took to pull a leaf down. He even tried to pull a leaf away to see how strong they were. He found that the ants used great strength to keep the leaves held tight.

There are different kinds of weaver ants in the world.

One kind is called Oecophylla smaragdina, which lives in places like India and Australia. Another kind is Oecophylla longinoda, which lives in the Afrotropics. These ants have different sized workers in their colonies. Major workers are much longer than the minor workers. The majors go out to find food and defend the nest. The minors stay inside to care for the babies and milk scale insects.

These scale insects provide a sweet liquid called honeydew for the ants.

Weaver ants have a special relationship with humans too.

In Southeast Asia, farmers have used them since at least 400 AD. The ants eat many small insects that hurt fruit trees. This is called biocontrol, which means using living things to control pests. Using ants can be cheaper than using chemical sprays. They also help keep the trees healthy. However, the ants also protect some bugs that eat tree sap. This shows how even small insects can change how a whole forest works.
