The red wood ant is a fascinating insect found in many parts of the world. You might hear people call them southern wood ants or even horse ants.

These ants live in the boreal forests of Eurasia. Their home stretches from Great Britain to Lake Baikal. They can also be found from Scandinavia down to Anatolia.

Scientists study them because they are very important to their environments. They are a type of ant that helps manage pests in forests. This makes them very useful for people who work in forestry.

These ants have a very interesting way of building their homes. They make large, dome-shaped mounds using grass, twigs, and conifer needles.

These nests are often built against old, rotting tree stumps. They like to stay in forest clearings where the sun can reach them. Some of these colonies are truly huge. They can have 100,000 to 400,000 workers living together.

Some nests even have 100 queens to help the colony grow. These massive structures can be several metres wide and tall.

Learning about these ants has happened over a long time. A naturalist named John Ray first studied them in England. In 1671, he found a way to extract formic acid from them. He did this by distilling a large number of crushed ants.

Today, we know that formic acid is a special defense. The ants spray this acid from their abdomens to protect themselves. It is a clever way for a small insect to stay safe. This discovery helped us understand how they use chemistry to survive.

There are many specific facts about how they live and eat. Adult ants mostly eat a sweet liquid called honeydew. This liquid comes from tiny insects known as aphids.

They are also great scavengers and will eat other small insects. Workers can be between 4.5 and 9 millimetres long.

They also use sticky resin from trees to help their nests. This resin acts like a shield against germs and rain. It also makes the nest strong so it does not collapse.

Red wood ants work together in ways that might seem familiar. Just like a family, they take care of their young. Worker ants perform cocoon nursing to protect the babies.

They also use chemical signals to recognize their own nestmates. This is like using a special scent to find your friends. If an ant does not smell right, the others may attack. This helps the colony stay organized and keep its territory safe.
