It is a member of the family Pyrochroidae. Most people know it by its bright colors. The body is a deep blood red. It has a black head and smooth parts. This bright color is called aposematic coloration. This is a way to warn predators that the beetle is toxic.

Being toxic helps the beetle stay safe while it moves around.

This beetle has a very interesting way it works. The life of a beetle starts as a larva. These larvae are creamy grey or yellow in color. They live under the bark of old, decaying logs. The larvae stay in the wood for many years. They eat decomposing wood and dead insects. They also eat microorganisms found in the wood debris.

As the larvae grow, the bark becomes loose. This creates more space for them to live together.

Adult beetles have a very different lifestyle. They are active during the day. They live in wooded areas and pastures. Adults usually appear in April. They are most common during May and early June. After that, they become very rare. The adults are predatory insects. They eat small insects found in flowers and leaves. They also eat pollen. They spend most of their short lives near their home logs.

These beetles live in many places in Europe.

You can find them in central Europe and Greece. They live in parts of Italy and Ukraine. In the United Kingdom, they are common in southern England. They are also found in the Welsh Border Counties. They do not live in Scotland. The adults are quite large for beetles. They usually measure between 14 and 20 mm in length.

To find a mate, the beetles use a special chemical. This chemical is called cantharidin. It is a type of semiochemical. A semiochemical is a chemical used for communication. Males have a special part on their head. They release the chemical to attract females. The female tests the chemical with her mouth.

This helps the beetles reproduce. It is a unique way for living things to talk to each other.
