You might know it by other names like the Maybug or doodlebug. These beetles are found mostly in Europe, including places like Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. They can also be found in parts of Asia, such as Turkey. These insects are very important in the natural world. They serve as a nutritious food source for many different animals.

This beetle goes through a process called metamorphosis. This means it changes through four different life stages. It starts as an egg and then becomes a larva. These larvae are often called white grubs. After the larva stage, it becomes a pupa before finally turning into an adult.

The larvae live underground for three to four years. In very cold places, they might stay as larvae for five years. They use their orange heads to find food. They can even smell CO2 to find plant roots.

Finding a mate is a very interesting part of their life. When it is warm in April or May, adult beetles appear. The males often fly in large groups called swarms. They look for females near the edges of forests. Females usually stay still and eat leaves. When females eat, the leaves release green leaf volatiles. These are special scents released by plants. Males use these scents to find the females.

Cockchafers can be a big problem for farmers. The adults eat leaves from trees like oak and maple. The larvae are even more hungry. They gnaw on the roots of grasses and fruit trees. A larva can eat 30 cm of root in just one day. This can quickly kill a plant.

Many animals try to eat them to keep their numbers down. European moles use their sense of smell to find larvae. Birds like starlings and crows also eat them. Even tiny flies can live inside the larvae.

People have had a long history with these beetles. In the Middle Ages, people even took cockchafers to court in Avignon. In the 1800s, some people in Germany even ate them. A doctor named Johann Joseph Schneider said they were eaten in soup. He said the soup tasted a bit like crab.

In the 1900s, farmers used chemical pesticides to stop them. This caused the beetle numbers to drop very low in the 1970s. Today, people use fewer chemicals to protect the environment.
