Beetles are a massive group of insects. Scientists call this group Coleoptera.

They are the largest group of all insects. There are about 400,000 known species today. This makes up 25% of all known animals. Some experts think there are up to 2.1 million species.

This huge variety helps them live almost everywhere. They live in forests, plants, and even underground. You just won't find them in the deep sea or polar regions.

Most beetles have a special way of growing. This is called complete metamorphosis.

First, a beetle hatches from an egg as a larva. Next, it enters a pupal stage. During this stage, the beetle stays mostly still. Then, it undergoes big changes to become an adult. Most beetles also have elytra. These are hardened front wings that act like a shield.

They protect the softer wings underneath. Some beetles, like water beetles, even trap air under these covers to help them dive.

Beetles have been around for a very long time. The oldest known beetle is called Coleopsis.

Scientists found its fossils in Germany. These fossils are about 295 million years old. Early beetles were likely wood eaters. They lived during the Permian period. Many of these early groups died out during a big extinction event. However, beetle diversity grew again during the Triassic period. They became more common as they learned to eat plants and other animals.

Beetles come in many different sizes and shapes. The Hercules beetle is the longest beetle.

It can reach at least 16.7 cm in length. The Goliath beetle is one of the heaviest.

On the other end, the featherwing beetle is tiny. It is the smallest free-living insect ever recorded. It might be only 325 micrometers long. Some beetles have bright colors to warn others they are toxic. Others use camouflage to hide in the sand or leaves.

Humans and beetles have a long history together. In ancient Egypt, people saw scarab beetles as sacred.

Some people even use beetles for art or as pets. Many beetles are helpful to us. For example, ladybugs eat pests that hurt crops.

Other beetles can be a hard job for farmers. The Colorado potato beetle and the boll weevil can damage plants. Even though some are pests, many beetles are very important to our world.
