There are about 400,000 known species. Some experts think there are millions more! Most beetles have a special feature. Their front wings are hard. We call these hard covers elytra.

These covers act like a shield. They protect the soft wings underneath.

Beetles live almost everywhere. You can find them in forests and near water. They are not found in the deep sea or polar areas. Beetles go through complete metamorphosis. This is a way of growing. They start as larvae. Then they stay still in a pupa stage. Finally, they become adults.

Many beetles help humans. Ladybugs eat tiny pests that hurt crops. Other beetles can be pests. They might eat farm plants. Some beetles even glow in the dark. We call these fireflies. They use light to talk to each other. The oldest beetle fossils are 295 million years old.
