Butterflies and moths belong to a group called Lepidoptera. This name comes from Greek words for "scale" and "wing."

Most of these insects have wings covered in tiny scales. These scales create many bright colors and patterns. They also help the insect stay warm or hide from enemies.

These insects go through a big change called metamorphosis.

It starts when a female lays eggs on a plant. A larva, or caterpillar, hatches from the egg. Caterpillars have chewing mouthparts called mandibles to eat leaves.

They have a soft body with several pairs of legs. As they grow, they go through stages called instars.

Next, the insect becomes a pupa. Some moths spin a silk cocoon for safety. Many butterflies make a hard skin called a chrysalis. Inside, the body changes into an adult.

The adult has a long tube called a proboscis. They use this to drink nectar from flowers. Most adults eat only nectar, but some do not eat at all. They live off power stored from when they were caterpillars.
