They use special mouthparts to pierce plant skin. Then they suck up the sap for food. Most females stay in one spot for their whole lives. They make a hard cover out of wax. This wax helps protect them.

This wax can look like fish scales. That is how they got their name.

Males look very different from females. This is called sexual dimorphism. This means the males and females do not look alike. Males often have legs and wings. They look like small flies. Most males do not eat. They live for only a few days.

Scale insects also make a sweet liquid. We call this honeydew. Ants love to eat this sweet juice. Ants will often protect the bugs from enemies. This is a mutualistic relationship. This means both bugs and ants help each other.

Some scale insects are pests that hurt crops. Other species make useful things like dyes. These dyes can make colors like crimson.
