Aphid

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Aphids are small insects that live on plants.

They use special mouthparts to drink plant sap. These parts are called stylets. The sap flows into the aphid because it is under pressure.

Some aphids eat only one type of plant. Others can live on many different plants.

Aphids can grow their numbers very fast. Most aphids do not have wings. They give birth to live young. These young are often female. Sometimes the young are already pregnant when they are born. This helps the group grow quickly.

If a plant is not good, winged aphids may grow. These winged insects can fly to new plants. They can even fly high in the wind.

Many aphids are pests to farmers. They can make plants weak. They also spread plant viruses. Some aphids make a sweet liquid called honeydew. This can cause dark mold to grow on plants.

Many animals eat aphids. Ladybugs and wasps are natural enemies. They help keep aphid numbers low.
