Most leafhoppers live on plants. They use mouthparts to suck sap from grass, shrubs, or trees. Some species are very colorful. Others look plain.

These bugs have special bodies. Their back legs are made for jumping. They also have tiny hairs on their legs. These hairs help spread a coating over their bodies. This coating keeps them dry. It also carries pheromones, which are chemicals used to talk to others.

Leafhoppers go through direct development. This means they grow from a nymph to an adult. They do not have a pupal stage. Some leafhoppers are pests. They can carry plant viruses or bacteria. This can make plants sick. For example, the beet leafhopper can spread a virus to tomatoes and eggplants. Some leafhoppers even build silk nests under leaves to stay safe.
