Treehopper

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Treehoppers are small insects. They belong to a group called Membracidae.

There are about 3,200 different kinds of treehoppers. You can find them on almost every part of the world. Most treehoppers live for only a few months.

These bugs are famous for their strange shapes. They have a large part on their back called a pronotum. This part can grow into many odd shapes. It helps them hide from enemies. Some look like plant thorns. Others look like twigs, seeds, or even ants.

Treehoppers eat by using a tube-like mouth. They use it to pierce plant stems. They drink the sap inside the plant. This sap can turn into a sweet liquid called honeydew.

This liquid often attracts ants. Many treehoppers and ants work together. The ants get food from the honeydew. In return, the ants protect the treehoppers from danger.

Female treehoppers lay eggs in plant stems. They use a tool called an ovipositor to make slits in the plant. Some mothers stay near their eggs to keep them safe. They may even buzz their wings to scare away intruders.
