Gall midges are a very large family of flies.

Most are tiny. Many are less than 1 millimeter long. They have long antennae, which are feelers on their heads. Their wings are often hairy. Many of these flies are orange or yellow. This color comes from something called carotenoids. They can make these colors themselves.

Many gall midges live inside plants. The larvae, or baby flies, eat the plant tissue. This makes the plant grow strange bumps called galls.

Some species can be pests. For example, the Hessian fly hurts wheat. Other types can damage rice, coffee, or fruit.

But some gall midges are helpful. Their larvae are predators. This means they eat other small bugs. They often eat aphids and spider mites. These other bugs can hurt crops. By eating them, the midges help plants stay healthy.
