They belong to a family called Saldidae. Most of these bugs live near water. You can find them by lakes or the sea. Some live where the ocean meets the land. This area is called the intertidal zone.

These bugs have oval bodies. They can jump or fly to get away. Most shore bugs are predators. This means they hunt other small things. They are also scavengers. Scavengers eat dead things they find.

Some bugs can even stay under water. This happens when the tide comes in. A type called Saldula pallipes can do this. They stay safe even when the water is high.

There are about 350 different species. Most live in Nearctic and Palearctic lands. These bugs must survive the cold winter. They go into diapause to rest. Diapause is a way to stay still during the cold. They might stay as eggs or as adults.
