Lygaeidae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Seed bugs are a big group of true bugs.

They live all over the world. Most people call them seed bugs. Some call them milkweed bugs or ground bugs. These bugs have oval or long bodies. They also have antennae with four parts.

What do they eat? Many species eat seeds. Some drink sap from plants. Others eat seed pods. A few are omnivores, which means they eat many things. Some bugs, like the wekiu bug, are insectivores. This means they eat other insects.

You can tell them apart from other bugs. They have ocelli. These are simple eyes. They also have special wings. The front wings have only four or five veins. This helps them look different from squash bugs.

Scientists study many groups of these bugs. Some groups used to be in this family. Now they are their own families. One group is called Psamminae. They look like beetles. Scientists are still learning about them. Their place in the bug world is not fully known yet.
