Shore bugs are a special group of insects. They belong to a family named Saldidae. These bugs live near water edges. You might find them by lakes or streams. They also live on sea coasts. Some stay near where fresh water meets the sea.

These insects are very useful to their homes. They act as predators and scavengers. A predator hunts living things for food. A scavenger eats things that are already dead. This helps keep the shoreline clean. They are important parts of the water's edge.

These bugs have an oval shape. They have a few ways to move. If they feel danger, they can leap away. They can also take flight to escape. Some species live in the intertidal zone. This is the area where the ocean meets the land. The water comes in and goes out here. A bug called Saldula pallipes is very tough. Both the adults and the young can stay under water. They do this when the high tide comes in.

Scientists have studied these bugs for a long time. Many different groups, or genera, belong to this family. There are 39 different genera in the Saldidae family. Some names were given by people like Fabricius in 1803. Other names come from people like Reuter in 1891. Scientists like Polhemus and Evans also named many groups. They have worked to name these bugs over many years. This helps us know how they are related.

There are about 350 known species of shore bugs. Most of them live in two main areas. These areas are the Nearctic and the Palearctic. The bugs must survive the cold winter months. They do this through a state called diapause. Diapause is a way to rest during the winter. They might stay as eggs during this time. Some might stay as adults instead.

You can think of shore bugs like little cleaners. They find food in small spaces near the water. They use their jumping skills to stay safe. Just like a small animal in your yard, they react to the world. They find a way to live in a changing place. The tides change the land every single day. These bugs have found a way to thrive there.
