True bugs belong to a huge group called Hemiptera.

This group is very large and diverse. It contains more than 80,000 species of insects. You might know some of them, like cicadas or aphids. Others include assassin bugs, bed bugs, and shield bugs. They live in many places around the world. Most live on land, but some live in fresh water.

Most of these insects have a very special way of eating. They use a mouthpart called a rostrum, which looks like a beak.

Inside this beak is a thin tool called a stylet. The stylet works like a tiny straw to pierce and suck. It has two small channels inside for moving liquids. One channel carries saliva out into the food. The other channel pulls the liquid food into the bug.

This helps them drink plant sap or even hunt other small creatures.

Scientists have studied these insects for a very long time. The fossil record for Hemiptera goes back to the Carboniferous period.

Some of the oldest fossils are from the Lower Permian. This was a very long time ago. Different groups appeared at different times in history. For example, aphids and scale insects appeared during the Triassic period. This shows that true bugs have been part of Earth for millions of years.

There are many interesting facts about how these bugs live.

Many aphids can reproduce very quickly through parthenogenesis. This means they can make clones of themselves from unfertilized eggs. This helps them grow their populations fast when food is good. Some bugs, like the giant water bug, live in water. Others, like the pondskater, skate on the water's surface.

Cicadas are also famous for making very loud songs. They use drumlike organs called tymbals to make these sounds.

True bugs are all around us in our daily lives.

Some species can be pests that damage the crops farmers grow. Others, like the bed bug, live close to humans. Humans have even used some bugs for many different things. For example, cochineal bugs are used to make red dyes. Some people have even used cicadas as food. They are a fascinating part of the natural world.
