The Pentatomoidea are a huge group of insects.

Scientists say there are about 7,000 different species. These bugs belong to a larger group called Hemiptera. Most of these insects are very important to study. They can even be pests that hurt farm crops.

These bugs have a special way of eating.

They have mouthparts that work like a straw. This part is called a stylet. The stylet is tucked inside a part called a labium. Most of these bugs use the stylet to suck sap from plants. Some bugs, like the Asopinae, are different. These predatory bugs use their stylet to suck blood from animals. This is how they get their food.

Many of these insects have a clever way to stay safe. They use special glands to make a bad smell. This smell helps to scare away predators.

Young bugs have these glands on their belly. Adults have glands on their middle body segment, called the metathorax. Most bugs also have a hard part on their back. This is called a scutellum. It can be shaped like a triangle.

There are 21 different families in this group.

Sixteen of these families are still alive today. Five families lived a long time ago and are now extinct. The Pentatomidae is the largest family. It has over 4,700 species and 900 genera. Other families like Cydnidae have about 765 species. These are known as burrowing bugs.

Learning about these bugs helps us understand the world. Some bugs, like the red and black Parastrachia, show maternal care. This means the mothers look after their eggs. Other bugs, like the jewel bugs, have very bright colors. You can find these insects in many places. Some live in tropical Africa or South America. Others live in Asia or Australia. They are part of the amazing world of living things.
