There is a large group of insects called Pentatomoidea.

This group has about 7,000 different species. You might know some of them. They include stink bugs and shield bugs. They also include jewel bugs and giant shield bugs.

Most of these bugs have a special part on their back. This part is called a scutellum. It is a hard part that covers their body. It can look like a triangle.

These bugs have a way to eat using a straw-like part. This part is called a stylet. They use it to suck sap from plants. Some bugs, like the Asopinae, use it to suck blood from animals. Most of them eat plants.

Many bugs in this group can protect themselves. They have glands that make a bad smell. This smell keeps predators away. Young bugs have these glands on their bellies. Adult bugs have them on their middle body parts. Some bugs, like the brown marmorated stink bug, can hurt farm crops. This makes them pests for farmers.
