Rove beetle

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Rove beetles are a very large group of insects. They belong to a family called Staphylinidae.

Most of these beetles have very short elytra. These are the hard covers that protect their wings. Because the covers are short, much of their body shows. To fly, they must fold their wings like origami.

These beetles come in many shapes and colors. Some are long, while others are round. They can be black, red, or yellow. Some even shine like blue or green metal. Most are very small, often between 2 and 8 mm long.

Rove beetles live in many places. You can find them in forest leaves or near water. Some live on ocean shores. Many are predators that eat other small bugs.

One type called Stenus has a special way to hunt. They use blood pressure to shoot parts of their mouth at prey. These parts have a sticky glue to catch the bug. Other types eat dead animals or live inside ant colonies. They are very helpful to nature.
