Others participate in mutualistic relationships with mammals by eating parasites like fleas. This provides a benefit to the host animal. However, some species can be harmful to humans. Members of the subtribe Paederina, specifically the genus Paederus, contain a potent toxin called pederin in their haemolymph, or blood. This substance is a highly toxic vesicant, meaning it can cause skin irritation known as dermatitis linearis. Pederin is noted to be more potent than cobra venom. Because they are so sensitive to habitat changes, scientists also use them as ecological disturbance indicators to monitor human-impacted environments.
