The Colorado potato beetle and the cereal leaf beetle can damage important crops. The asparagus beetle and the mustard beetle also target cultivated plants. However, some beetles are used for biocontrol. This means people use them to help manage invasive weeds. Research has found three major groups, or clades, within the family. One is the 'chrysomeline' clade, which includes Chrysomelinae and Galerucinae. Another is the 'sagrine' clade, containing Bruchinae, Sagrinae, Criocerinae, and Donaciinae. The third is the 'eumolpine' clade, which includes Spilopyrinae, Cassidinae, Eumolpinae, Cryptocephalinae, and Lamlamosomatinae.
