Most weevils have a snout called a rostrum. This snout curves downward. Many females use this long snout to lay eggs. They tuck the eggs inside plant parts.

Most weevils eat plants. Some even eat rotten wood or bark. Their babies, called larvae, are shaped like the letter C. These larvae do not have legs. They have strong jaws for eating.

Weevils can be very small or quite large. Most are between 5 and 15 mm long. Some grow as big as 35 mm. If a weevil feels scared, it will play dead. It will lie very still on its back. Weevils are pests to many plants. They can chew holes in nuts and fruit. However, they do not hurt people or pets.
