Most weevils are very small. Some are less than one centimeter long. They are known for having a long snout. This snout is called a rostrum. The rostrum has mouthparts for chewing. Weevils use them to dig tunnels into grain.

There are about 97,000 species of weevils. Many of them eat plants. Some weevils are pests. They can damage or kill crops. For example, the boll weevil attacks cotton. It lays eggs inside the cotton. Then, the larvae eat their way out. Other weevils eat wheat or maize.

Weevils have different body parts. True weevils have elbowed antennae. This means their antennae have a bend. Primitive weevils have straight antennae. Some weevils can fly. Others can jump. A few cannot fly at all.

In some species, males and females look very different. This is called sexual dimorphism. In one kind, the female snout is twice as long as the male snout. She uses her long snout to make holes in plant buds for her eggs.
