Most ground beetles are shiny black or metallic. They have hard wing covers called elytra. In some types, these covers are fused together. This means those beetles cannot fly.

Most ground beetles are hunters. They eat other small creatures. This makes them very helpful to people. For example, some eat caterpillars that hurt crops.

Tiger beetles are very special hunters. They are some of the fastest land animals. They use their large eyes to find food.

Many beetles have a way to stay safe. They have glands in their back. These glands make a liquid that tastes bad. Bombardier beetles are very famous for this. They mix liquids to make a hot gas. This makes a loud popping sound. The gas can even hurt small animals. One famous scientist named Charles Darwin once had a beetle spray him. It caused him a lot of pain!
