Ground beetle

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ground beetles are a huge and successful family of insects. They belong to a group called Carabidae. This family is one of the most species-rich in the animal kingdom. There are more than 40,000 different species found all over the world. About 2,000 of these live in North America. Another 2,700 species can be found in Europe.

Most ground beetles are hunters that eat other living things. They are primarily carnivorous, which means they eat meat. Some species are omnivorous and eat both plants and meat. Many live under tree bark, logs, or rocks. They might also hide in the sand near rivers and ponds.

Many beetles have a clever way to stay safe from predators. They have special glands in the lower back of their bodies. These glands produce liquids that can taste very bad. Bombardier beetles are famous for a very intense version of this. They mix chemicals to create a small explosion. This makes a loud popping sound and a cloud of hot gas.

History shows that these beetles have fascinated people for a long time. In the 1800s, there was even a "beetle craze" in England. Many people paid high prices for rare and exotic specimens. The famous scientist Charles Darwin was a very big collector of beetles. He loved searching for rare types when he was about 20 years old. One beetle even sprayed acid into his throat!

Ground beetles are often very helpful to humans. Many species hunt pests like caterpillars that eat crops. For example, the forest caterpillar hunter was sent to New England in 1905. This was done to help control the gypsy moth. However, some beetles can be a nuisance. Large beetles might hide in food while camping. They can release their smelly liquids if they feel threatened.
