Gladiators are a very unusual group of insects.

They belong to a family called Mantophasmatidae. These bugs are wingless, so they cannot fly at all. Because they lack wings, they can be quite hard to find. They look like a mix between two other insects. They resemble praying mantises and phasmids. Scientists place them in the order Mantophasmatodea. Some experts even group them with Grylloblattodea in a larger group called Notoptera.

These insects have a very interesting way of living. They are carnivores, which means they eat other living things.

To find partners, they use vibrations to talk. They send these shakes through the ground or the surface they are on. During mating, the process takes a long time. It can last for up to three days. The male uses his cerci, which are small parts on his body, to hold the female. He bends his flexible abdomen around her right side to grasp her.

People first discovered these insects in 2001.

Scientists first described them using old museum specimens. These included bugs from Namibia and Tanzania. They also studied a 45-million-year-old specimen found in Baltic amber. This fossil is named *Raptophasma kerneggeri*. In early 2002, an international expedition found live bugs in Namibia. They found *Tyrannophasma gladiator* on the Brandberg Massif. They also found *Mantophasma zephyra* on the Erongoberg Massif.

There are many different types of gladiators. As of 2018, there are 21 known species.

Most live in western South Africa and Namibia. You can find them at the Brandberg Massif. Some live in the Richtersveld area of South Africa. In 2018, scientists found two new genera there. These are named *Kuboesphasma* and *Minutophasma*. Other groups include *Austrophasma* and *Sclerophasma*. There is also a group called *Tanzaniophasmatinae* found in Tanzania.

Learning about gladiators helps us see how life changes over time.

We can see this through their fossils. The fossils suggest they used to live in many more places. For example, fossils from the Eocene period show a wider ancient home. Some fossils even come from the Middle Jurassic in China. This tells us they have been around for a very long time. Even though they are small, they tell a huge story about our world.
