Mantises are a group of insects called Mantodea. There are more than 2,400 different species in this group.

They live in many places, including warm tropical areas and cooler temperate lands. Most mantises are ambush predators. This means they wait for food to come to them. Some species are also active hunters that run after their prey.

They are very important in nature because they eat many different types of small bugs.

A mantis has a very special way of seeing and catching food. They have large, triangular heads with bulging eyes. These eyes have a special area called a fovea. The fovea helps them see tiny details clearly.

When they see something moving, they turn their flexible necks to look closely. To catch food, they use raptorial legs. These are front legs that are enlarged and covered in spikes. The spikes help the mantis grip and hold onto its prey securely.

Scientists have studied these insects for a very long time. The name Mantodea comes from ancient Greek words. It means "prophet form."

A German scientist named Hermann Burmeister gave them this name in 1838. In the past, people in ancient Greece and Egypt thought mantises had supernatural powers. Some people even call them praying mantises. This is because they hold their front legs in a way that looks like praying.

We can learn a lot about the past from mantis fossils. Some fossils are found in amber, which is hard tree sap.

One fossil called Santanmantis axelrodi was found in the Crato Formation in Brazil. It lived during the Early Cretaceous period. Other fossils have been found in Japan and the Karabastau Formation. By the year 2022, scientists knew of 37 different fossil species. These fossils show that even ancient mantises had legs designed for catching prey.

You might see mantises in your own life. Many people keep them as pets because they are interesting to watch.

Some mantises are even active at night. Males often fly at night to find females using their sense of smell. You might see them near bright lights in your yard. While they look like stick insects, they are actually different. They are most closely related to cockroaches and termites. This makes them a very unique part of the insect world.
