Mantises have very special bodies. They have large, triangular heads. Their eyes bulge out from the sides. This helps them see things very well. They can even turn their heads almost 180 degrees. This means they can look behind them. They use their eyes to find food. Their eyes have a special spot called a fovea. This spot helps them see tiny details.

Most mantises are ambush predators. This means they wait for food to come to them. They stay very still. They hold their front legs in a way that looks like praying. This is how they got their common name. Their front legs are called raptorial legs. These legs have sharp spikes. The spikes help them grab and hold prey. Some larger mantises even eat small birds or lizards.

In the past, fossils show mantises have been around a long time. Some fossils are found in amber, which is hard tree sap. These fossils show that ancient mantises also had spiked legs for catching food.
