Mantises belong to an insect order called Mantodea. This group includes over 2,400 different species. These insects live in many habitats, from tropical regions to temperate areas.

They are known for their unique bodies and specialized hunting methods. Most mantises are ambush predators that wait for prey to come to them. Some species are active hunters that run across the ground to find food. They are important members of their ecosystems because they eat many types of arthropods.

A mantis uses several specialized body parts to hunt and survive. Their most famous feature is the raptorial legs. These are enlarged forelegs used for catching and gripping prey. The legs have many spikes and tooth-like structures called tubercles. These features help the mantis hold its food very securely.

The mantis also has a very flexible neck. This allows the insect to rotate its head nearly 180 degrees. This movement helps the mantis keep its eyes on moving targets. Their large, triangular heads also contain a beak-like snout and mandibles for eating.

Vision is a vital part of how a mantis operates. They have large compound eyes that contain up to 10,000 ommatidia, which are small visual units. A special area at the front of the eye is called the fovea. The fovea provides high resolution so the mantis can examine prey closely.

They also use stereoscopic vision to judge distance. This is different from human vision because they use it specifically to capture prey. When they see movement, they rotate their heads to center the object in the fovea. Many mantises are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. However, some species are active at night to avoid predators like birds.

Scientists have a complex history of classifying these insects. The name Mantodea comes from the Ancient Greek words for "prophet" and "form." The German entomologist Hermann Burmeister coined this name in 1838.

For a long time, people thought all mantises belonged to one large family called Mantidae. However, researchers have updated these classifications many times. In 2002, the group was split into many different families. Today, there are 29 recognized families within the order. Mantises are also closely related to cockroaches and termites in the superorder Dictyoptera.

We can learn about the history of mantises through fossils. Fossils of these insects are quite rare. By the year 2022, scientists had identified 37 different fossil species. Some fossils are found in amber, which is hardened tree resin.

Other fossils are found in rock, known as compression fossils. One famous fossil is Santanmantis axelrodi from the Crato Formation in Brazil. This species lived during the Early Cretaceous period. Even these ancient insects had legs adapted for catching prey. Some fossils from the Jurassic period have also been reported.

Mantises have many different ways of interacting with their environment. Some species are macropterous, which means they have long wings. Others can be brachypterous with short wings, or even wingless.

They also have different ways of protecting themselves from predators. Many mantises use camouflage to hide from birds and lizards. Some species even have an auditory organ in their thorax. This helps them hear the ultrasound calls of bats. By detecting these calls, the mantis can move away to stay safe.

There are several interesting behaviors and facts about mantises. Some females practice sexual cannibalism by eating their mates after they mate.

This is a well-known behavior in some species. Additionally, mantises are common pets because they are fascinating to observe.

They are sometimes confused with other insects like stick insects or mantisflies. However, mantisflies are actually unrelated and are an example of convergent evolution. This means they evolved similar traits, like spiked legs, even though they are not close relatives. Mantises remain one of the most unique groups of insects in the world.
