Some bugs use a clever trick to hide. They look like small sticks or twigs. This is called camouflage.

Many types of bugs do this. Some are called stick mantises. Others are called twig mantises. For example, the Brunneria group includes the Brazilian stick mantis.

There are also the African stick mantises. These belong to the genus Hoplocorypha. We should not confuse them with stick insects. Stick insects belong to a group called Phasmatodea. People used to think they were close relatives. Now, we know they are separate. There is also a group called Mantophasmatodea. This is a new group of bugs. Stick mantises are part of the Mantodea group. They use their bodies to blend in. This helps them stay safe in nature. They look just like the plants around them.
