Stick mantis

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some insects use a clever trick to stay safe. They use camouflage to hide from others. Many mantises look just like small sticks or twigs. These bugs are often called stick mantises. Other types are called twig mantises. This name helps people know how they look. It is a way to describe many different species.

These insects hide by matching their surroundings. Their bodies look like the plants around them. This makes them hard to see in nature. Some groups have names based on where they live. The Brunneria group includes the Brazilian stick mantis. There is also a small-winged stick mantis. These bugs use their shapes to blend in perfectly.

Scientists have studied these insects for a long time. They look closely at how bugs are related. In the past, people had different ideas about them. They once thought stick insects were close relatives of all mantises. This old way of grouping them is now outdated. New studies show that these groups are actually separate. Scientists now use new ways to classify them.

Many specific names exist for these different bugs. The Hoplocorypha group contains African stick mantises. The genus Paratoxodera includes the Borneo stick mantis. There is also a giant Malaysian stick mantis. Another type is the Peruvian stick mantis. These names help experts tell each bug apart. Each one lives in a different part of the world.

It is easy to mix up different bugs. Do not confuse stick mantises with stick insects. Stick insects belong to a group called Phasmatodea. Mantises belong to a different group called Mantodea. There is even a newer group called Mantophasmatodea. Think of them as different families that look similar. Just because they look like sticks does not mean they are the same.
