Cockroaches are fascinating and very hardy insects. They belong to a group called Blattodea.

While many people think of them as pests, most species are small and harmless. There are about 4,600 different types of cockroaches in the world today. Only about 30 of these species live near humans in our homes. These insects are amazing because they can live in many different climates. They can survive in the freezing Arctic or in the hot tropics.

Most cockroaches have a very specific way their bodies work. They have a tough outer shell called an exoskeleton. This shell contains calcium carbonate to keep their insides safe. The outside of the shell is coated in wax to keep water out.

Their bodies are divided into a thorax and a ten-segmented abdomen. They use chewing mouthparts to eat their food. To move, they use three pairs of sturdy legs. The back legs are the longest and provide power for running.

These insects have a very long history on Earth. Their ancestors are called roachoids. These early relatives lived around 320 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. Modern cockroaches first appeared during the Late Jurassic period.

Scientists have found fossils of cockroaches that are 108 million years old. Some fossils are even trapped in amber from 40 to 50 million years ago. This shows they have been around for a very long time.

Scientists have learned surprising things about how cockroaches are related to other bugs. For a long time, people thought termites were a completely different group. However, genetics show that termites actually evolved from cockroaches.

This means termites are part of the Blattodea group too. Some cockroaches are even more closely related to termites than to other roaches. This makes the group very complex to study. Researchers use these facts to understand how different living things change over time.

Many cockroaches are social and like to live in groups. They use special smells called pheromones to communicate with each other.

These smells help them find food or find a good place to hide. Some species even use these smells to recognize their own family members. They can make group decisions about where to go based on how many other roaches are nearby. This is similar to how some animals work together to stay safe. Even though they are small, their social lives are very busy.
