Termites are fascinating insects that live in large, organized groups.

Many people call them "white ants," but they are not actually ants. They are actually a special type of cockroach.

These insects are known as detritophagous, which means they eat decaying plant material. They often eat wood, leaf litter, and soil humus. Because they live in such large groups, scientists sometimes call their colonies "superorganisms." This means the whole colony acts like one single living thing.

A termite colony works through a strict system of roles. Most colonies begin with a king and a queen. This pair stays together for their entire lives.

The colony also has different groups called castes. These include workers and soldiers that look and act differently. Most workers and soldiers are sterile, meaning they cannot have babies. Termites grow through an incomplete metamorphosis. This means they go through three stages: egg, nymph, and adult.

Scientists have learned a lot about where termites came from. For a long time, people thought termites were a separate group from cockroaches. However, recent studies show they actually evolved from cockroaches. They are closely related to wood-eating cockroaches called Cryptocercus.

Some fossils suggest they might have started during the Jurassic period. A stem-termite named Sociala was found in the Karabastau Formation in 2024. This helps us understand their very long history on Earth.

There are about 2,997 different species of termites alive today.

A huge number of these, 2,125 species, belong to the family Termitidae. You can find them on almost every landmass in the world. They are most diverse in the tropics, especially in Africa. In Africa, there are more than 1,000 described species. While many termites are pests that damage buildings, most are actually helpful. For example, only 9 species are major pests in North America.

Termites play a very important role in our natural world. They are great decomposers that recycle old wood and plants. Some species are even "ecosystem engineers." This means they can change the soil to help plants grow. They do this by building large mounds.

Humans also interact with them in interesting ways. In Venezuela, the Makiritare people use them as a spice. They are also used in traditional medicine for things like asthma or bronchitis.
