Blattodea is a large group of insects that includes cockroaches and termites.

For a long time, people thought termites were their own separate group. However, new tests on DNA showed that termites actually evolved from cockroaches. This means termites are a special kind of cockroach. There are about 4,400 species of cockroaches in almost 500 different groups. There are also about 3,000 species of termites in around 300 groups. These insects are very important to the world's ecosystems. They help break down old things like wood and leaves.

Termites and cockroaches have very different ways of living. Termites are eusocial, which means they live in organized colonies. They use a caste system to give every bug a job. A king and a queen breed to make the whole colony. The rest of the group is made of workers and soldiers. Workers find food and take it back to the nest. Soldiers have strong jaws to protect everyone from danger.

Cockroaches do not live in colonies like that. Instead, they often gather in groups but can live on their own. Most cockroaches have hard bodies and are often brown in color.

Scientists have studied how these insects are related for many years. They looked at DNA from 107 different species to find the truth. This study included many families of cockroaches and termites. They found that termites are nested inside the cockroach family tree. They also found that a group called mantids is a sister group to Blattodea. Researchers like Eggleton, Beccaloni, and Inward helped map these relationships in 2007. Later, Evangelista and others updated this information in 2019. These studies help us see how life changes over time.

Both groups of insects can be found in many different places. There are over 4,000 species of cockroaches on every continent. They live in leaf litter, under logs, and even in caves. Some even live in the water!

Termites live on every continent except for Antarctica. You can find the most variety of termites in Africa. Termite nests can be very large and complex. In Africa, some mounds reach nine meters tall. These mounds can be thirty meters wide and help many other living things grow nearby.

Even though they look different, they share many habits. Both groups like warm and wet places. They also use smells called pheromones to talk to each other. They can follow trails and recognize their own family members.

Some cockroaches even eat the waste of older bugs to get helpful germs. These germs help them digest their food more easily. Termites also use special germs in their guts to eat wood. This shared way of living shows how closely they are related. It is amazing to see how one group of insects can become so diverse.
