Ants are tiny insects that do big things. They belong to a group called Hymenoptera. This group also includes bees and wasps.

Ants are very special because they live in colonies. These groups work like one single living thing. Scientists call this a superorganism.

Some colonies are small and live in tiny holes. Other colonies are huge and have millions of ants. Some even reach hundreds of millions in super colonies.

They live on almost every land on Earth. Only Antarctica and a few remote islands have no native ants.

An ant's body has a very specific shape. They have elbowed antennae on their heads. They also have a thin waist called a petiole.

This waist is a narrow part between their middle and their back. Like other insects, ants have an exoskeleton. This is a hard outer shell that protects their body.

They do not have lungs to breathe. Instead, they use tiny holes called spiracles. These valves let air pass into their bodies. They also have a thin tube that acts like a heart. This tube pumps fluid through their bodies.

Ants have lived on Earth for a very long time. They evolved from wasp ancestors during the Cretaceous period.

Other very old fossils date back to 113 million years ago. These early ants were different from the ones we see today. By 60 million years ago, ants had become very dominant. They moved into many different roles in nature. They became successful at finding food and defending themselves.

There are many different kinds of ants in the world. Scientists have described more than 13,800 species.

Some experts think there might be 22,000 species in total. They are found all over the globe. For example, there are 2,500 species in Africa.

In Asia, there are 2,080 known species. The Neotropics have 2,162 species as well. Most ants are yellow, red, brown, or black. However, some tropical ants can even look metallic or green. They are found in almost every habitat on land.

Ants are very useful and sometimes a bit difficult. Many people use ants for food or medicine.

Some ants are even used to control pests in nature. But ants can also cause trouble for humans. They can move into buildings or damage crops.

Some ants, like the red imported fire ant, are invasive. This means they move to new places and cause problems. They are very good at solving hard problems. They can even use their bodies to build bridges. This helps the whole colony move together.
