Ants are highly organized, eusocial insects belonging to the family Formicidae. They are part of the order Hymenoptera, which also includes bees and wasps.

These insects are famous for their complex social structures. They live in colonies that act as a single unit. Scientists call these colonies superorganisms because the individuals work together to support the group.

While some colonies are small and live in natural cavities, others are massive. Some super colonies can contain hundreds of millions of individuals. Ants are found on almost every landmass on Earth. The only places without native ants are Antarctica and a few remote, inhospitable islands.

The physical structure of an ant is very specialized. Their bodies are divided into three main sections, or tagmata: the head, the mesosoma, and the metasoma.

A distinctive feature is the petiole, a narrow, node-like waist that connects the mesosoma to the gaster, which is the main part of the abdomen. They also possess geniculate antennae, which are elbowed in shape. Like other arthropods, ants have an exoskeleton for protection.

Instead of lungs, they breathe through tiny valves called spiracles. They do not have a closed circulatory system like humans. Instead, a thin, perforated tube called a dorsal aorta pumps haemolymph through their bodies. Their nervous system uses a ventral nerve cord with various ganglia to control their limbs.

Ant colonies are organized into different groups called castes. Most members of a colony are sterile, wingless females known as workers, or ergates.

Some colonies also have specialized soldiers called dinergates. Every colony typically includes fertile females called queens, or gynes, and fertile males known as drones. This division of labor allows the colony to function efficiently. Workers forage for food, while queens focus on reproduction. This social organization helps ants modify their habitats and defend themselves against threats.

Ants have a deep evolutionary history dating back to the Cretaceous period. They evolved from vespoid wasp ancestors.

In 1966, researchers E. O. Wilson and his colleagues studied a fossil called Sphecomyrma. This specimen was trapped in 92-million-year-old amber. It showed features of wasps that are not found in modern ants. The oldest ant fossils date back between 113 and 100 million years. Modern ant subfamilies only began to appear around 80 to 70 million years ago. By 60 million years ago, ants had achieved ecological dominance.

Today, the diversity of ants is staggering. Scientists have described more than 13,800 species, though estimates suggest there may be 22,000 species in total.

Diversity is highest in the tropics. For example, Africa has about 2,500 known species, while Asia has 2,080. The Neotropics contain 2,162 species. In terms of total numbers, a 2022 study estimated there are about 20 quadrillion ants on Earth.

The total biomass of ants is estimated at 12 megatons of dry carbon. This is greater than the combined biomass of all wild birds and mammals. While most ants are yellow, red, or black, some tropical species show metallic colors or green hues.

Ants interact with the world in many surprising ways. They can be helpful, such as acting as biological pest control agents.

However, they can also be pests that damage crops or invade buildings. Some species, like the red imported fire ant from South America, are considered invasive species. This happens when they are accidentally introduced to new areas and take over. Ants also participate in complex relationships with other species. These include mutualistic, parasitic, and commensal relationships. Their ability to solve problems is also well-documented.

Understanding ants provides insight into many biological systems. Their social structures have inspired much of the study of human society.

Because they are easy to sample, they are used as indicator species in biodiversity studies. This means scientists watch ants to see how healthy an ecosystem is. Their success is tied to their ability to exploit resources and communicate. Whether they are building bridges with their bodies or tending to other insects, ants remain one of the most successful groups of animals on the planet.
