There are about 2,997 different species of termites alive today. A huge number of these, 2,125 species, belong to the family Termitidae. You can find them on almost every landmass in the world. They are most diverse in the tropics, especially in Africa. In Africa, there are more than 1,000 described species. While many termites are pests that damage buildings, most are actually helpful. For example, only 9 species are major pests in North America.
