It likely started in the Middle East. It spread across the globe by living near humans. These flies are gray or black with four dark lines on their thorax.

They have one pair of wings and large red compound eyes. Females are often larger than males. Because they can carry germs, many people consider them pests. However, they are also useful for scientific research into aging.

To eat, the housefly uses a special mouth called a proboscis.

This mouth is like a sponge with tiny grooves called pseudotracheae. These grooves suck up liquids through capillary action. If the food is solid, the fly uses saliva to soften it first.

Flies can even taste food by walking on it. They have taste organs on their legs called tarsi. To stay clean, they often rub their legs together. They can walk on ceilings using sticky pads called pulvilli.

First, a female lays white eggs on decaying organic matter. These eggs hatch into legless white larvae known as maggots. The maggots feed in dark, moist places like manure. After they grow, they turn into reddish-brown pupae.

A new adult eventually emerges from the pupal case. This process uses a pouch on the head called a ptilinum. Adult flies usually live for two to four weeks. Some even hibernate during the winter to stay alive.

Scientists have studied these flies for a long time.

Carl Linnaeus first described the housefly in 1758. He named it Musca domestica. Later, Johan Christian Fabricius gave a more detailed description in 1776. These flies are very important in biology labs. They are easy to keep and have short life cycles. This makes them great for studying how sex is determined. They are also used to study how living things age.

You might see houseflies in your own home or garden.

They play a big role in nature by recycling old matter. They help break down things like food waste and animal remains. Many animals, like birds and spiders, eat houseflies for food. Even tiny wasps can live inside the housefly larvae. This shows how every living thing is part of a big web. The housefly is a tiny but busy part of our world.
