Grylloblattidae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ice bugs are tiny insects that live in the coldest places on Earth. Some people call them ice crawlers. These insects are psychrophiles, which means they need cold to survive. They live on high mountains or near the edges of glaciers.

Most ice bugs are quite small. They are usually less than 3 cm long. The largest one is named Namkungia magnus. They are wingless, so they cannot fly. They have long antennae on their heads. They also have long parts on their tails called cerci.

These bugs have a very specific way they stay alive. They need to stay in a very narrow temperature range. If it gets too warm, they can die. In fact, many species die if it rises 5 °C above their best temperature. They can also die if it gets too cold because ice forms in their bodies. To stay safe, they live under snow pack near the soil. They move around with the seasons to find the right temperature.

Scientists first discovered these puzzling insects in 1914. E.M. Walker and T.B. Kurata were the people who found them. The first species they named was Grylloblatta campodeiformis. This name means it looks like a cricket-cockroach.

These insects belong to a group called Grylloblattodea. This group is its own order. Some scientists think it might be a suborder of Notoptera. They are closely related to a group called Mantophasmatodea.

There are about 34 living species in this family today. They live in many different places around the world. You can find them in western North America and East Asia. They live in places like Korea, Japan, China, and Russia. Some live in mountains, while others live in caves or glaciers.

In North America, some species live in only one single site. For example, Grylloblatta barberi is found in California. Because they live in such small areas, warming weather is a big threat. This makes many of them endangered.

Ice bugs are mostly active at night. They are omnivores, which means they eat different things. They mostly eat dead insects or other animal remains. If they cannot find dead bugs, they eat plant material. They often hide under stones or in leaf litter.

This lifestyle is very different from many other insects. Most insects like the sun and warmth. Ice bugs prefer the dark and the frost. They show us how life can find a way to live in extreme places.
