life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ice bugs are tiny insects that love the cold. People also call them ice crawlers.

These bugs live in very cold places. You can find them on high mountains. They live near glaciers and ice sheets. They are psychrophiles. This means they are living things that need cold to survive. Most ice bugs are less than 3 cm long. They do not have wings. They have long antennae on their heads. They also have long parts on their tails called cerci.

Ice bugs are active at night. They like to eat dead bugs. They can also eat plants if they must. They live under rocks or in leaf litter. They stay under the snow to stay safe. If it gets too warm, they can die. Many species live in only one small area. Warming weather is a threat to them. They may become endangered if it gets too hot. Scientists found them in 1914. They are part of a group called Grylloblattodea.
