life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Erinaceidae family includes hedgehogs and moonrats. Hedgehogs live in Africa and Eurasia. Moonrats live in Southeast Asia. These animals look a bit like shrews. They have long snouts and short tails. Most have five toes on each foot. Some have strong claws for digging.

Hedgehogs have special hair. These hairs are sharp spines. The spines form a shield for their bodies. Moonrats have normal hair instead. Moonrats also have scent glands. These glands make a very strong smell.

These animals are omnivores. This means they eat many different things. They mostly eat insects and earthworms. They also eat seeds and fruit. Sometimes they eat bird eggs or dead animals. Their teeth are sharp to catch prey.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal. This means they are active at night. Moonrats may be active during the day. Many live in burrows. Others make nests from leaves and grass. They like to live alone. Mothers give birth after six or seven weeks. The babies are born hairless and blind. Hedgehog spines start to grow very quickly.
