Erinaceidae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Erinaceidae family is a group of small mammals. It includes the well-known hedgehogs and the gymnures, also called moonrats.

Hedgehogs live in Africa and Eurasia. Moonrats live in Southeast Asia. These animals are part of the order Eulipotyphla. Scientists once thought they belonged to a different group called Insectivora. However, that old group is no longer used by experts. These animals are important for understanding how different species are related. They help us see how life has changed over a very long time.

Most members of this family look a bit like shrews. They have long snouts and short tails.

Most have five toes on each foot. Some even have strong claws for digging in the dirt. Hedgehogs have special hair that turns into sharp spines. These spines cover their backs to keep them safe. Moonrats do not have spines and have normal hair instead. Moonrats also have scent glands that can make a very strong smell. This smell helps them in their environment.

These animals are omnivores, which means they eat many things.

Their main diet is insects and earthworms. They also eat small invertebrates. Sometimes they eat seeds or fruit. They might even eat bird eggs or dead animals. Their teeth are very sharp. These teeth are built to impale small prey. This helps them eat their meals easily. Eating different foods helps them survive in many places.

History shows us that these animals have stayed similar for a long time.

They are placental mammals that have changed little since the Eocene period. There was once a "giant hedgehog" called Deinogalerix. It lived during the Miocene on Gargano Island in Italy. This animal was actually a type of gymnure. It was the size of a large rabbit. It may have eaten larger prey or dead animals. This shows how the family has grown and changed.

Erinaceids have interesting ways of living and growing.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so they are active at night. Moonrats may be active during the day. Many species live in simple burrows. Others build nests from grass and leaves. They often live alone rather than in groups. A mother gives birth after six to seven weeks. The babies are born blind and hairless. For hedgehogs, spines start to grow within 36 hours of birth.
