Tenrecs are a very diverse group of small mammals. They live only on the island of Madagascar.

These animals are special because they show something called convergent evolution. This is when different animals grow to look similar because they live in similar ways. Some tenrecs look like hedgehogs with hard spines. Others look more like shrews, rats, or even opossums. They can live in many places on the island. Some stay in trees, while others live in water or underground.

There are many ways these animals work to survive. Most tenrecs are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. Since they have poor eyesight, they use other senses to find their way. They have very sensitive whiskers to feel things around them. A few species can even use echolocation to navigate. This is a way of using sound to find objects. Most tenrecs eat many different things, but they mostly eat small bugs. Some species even live in the water like their relatives, the otter shrews.

Scientists have studied how tenrecs arrived on Madagascar. It is believed they came from Africa a long time ago. They may have traveled on floating plants across the Mozambique Channel. This happened between 25 and 42 million years ago. All tenrecs likely come from one single ancestor. This ancestor lived about 29 to 37 million years ago. Scientists did not realize tenrecs were part of a group called Afrotheria until the late 1990s. This group also includes elephants and golden moles.

Tenrecs come in many different sizes and shapes. The smallest species are only about 3 centimeters long. They weigh very little, just a few grams. The common tenrec is much larger. It can be 25 centimeters long and weigh over one kilogram.

The tailless tenrec is famous for having many babies. A female can have as many as 32 young at once. She has up to 29 teats to feed them. This is more than any other mammal in the world.

Today, many tenrec species face hard jobs to stay safe. Many of them live in forests that are being lost. People use slash-and-burn agriculture and mining in these areas. This makes it hard for tenrecs to find homes. Some species are also threatened by hunting or climate change. Two species are currently listed as endangered. Groups like the Madagascar Ankizy Fund work to help local people. They believe healthy communities can help protect animals like the tenrec.
