Eupleridae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Many special animals live only on the island of Madagascar. These animals belong to a family called Eupleridae.

They are also called Malagasy carnivorans. There are ten living species in this group. They belong to seven different genera. The most famous member is the fossa.

This animal is part of the Euplerinae subfamily. All these animals are now considered threatened species. They face hard jobs like habitat destruction. Other animals that are not from the island also compete with them.

Scientists want to know how these animals arrived on the island. They believe the animals came from mainland Africa. A single ancestor likely floated to Madagascar on a raft.

This event happened a very long time ago. This group of animals is called a clade. A clade is a group that shares one common ancestor. After they arrived, they went through adaptive radiation. This means they changed into many different types of animals. They are closely related to true herpestid mongooses.

People have studied these animals for many years. In 1996, Robert M. Hunt Jr. looked at their ears. He thought Madagascar was settled twice by different animals. He saw that some looked like civets and others like mongooses. However, new studies changed what we know. In 2003, researchers named Yoder and colleagues used genetic studies. They found that only one group of ancestors arrived. This single group then grew into the many species we see today.

There are many specific dates and numbers to know. The first ancestors likely arrived 18 to 24 million years ago. Some scientists like Philippe Gaubert and Veron have different estimates. They think the split happened about 19.4 million years ago. The range they found was between 16.5 and 22.7 million years ago. This time is known as the late Oligocene or early Miocene. These numbers help us see how old this family is.

You can see how these animals relate to others. The Eupleridae are part of a larger group called feliforms. Feliform means cat-like carnivores. This group includes true cats and hyenas. The fossa looks a bit like an extinct animal called Palaeoprionodon. That animal lived in Europe and Asia a long time ago. Even though they look like cats or mongooses, they are unique. They are a special part of the world's living history.
